Procoptodon goliah
Genus and Species: Procoptodon goliah
Common name:"Giant short faced kangaroo"
Lived: 1,600,000 - 40,000 (Pleistocene)
Size: Height: 2-3m tall (roughly 10 feet)
Description: The largest kangaroo to ever live, the giant short faced kangaroo had several features which distinguish it from modern roos. As its name implies, P. goliah had a flattened face with forward facing eyes, somewhat resembling that of a wombat. It's toes ended in a large single claw, and it's paws each had long fingers with hooked claws, perhaps an adaptation for hooking down branches and eating leaves.
Unlike modern roos, P goliah was most likely a forest dweller rather than a grasslands animal, and was able to reach its paws above its head, a feat modern roos are incapable of.
Associations with the 'marsupial lion' Thylacoleo carnifex in cave sites indicates the giant short faced roo was likely prey to the marsupial 'lion'.
Fossils: Fossils of the Giant Short-faced Kangaroo have been found at the Naracoorte World Heritage fossil deposits in South Australia, Lake Menindee in New South Wales, Darling Downs in Queensland, and at many other sites.
